Yesterday we took a break from snorkeling. It was kind of weird not touching my fins or mask all day, actually. Instead of spending the day with our faces submerged in extremely salty sea water (even though it is good for skin, right?), we explored part of the island on a hike. The first part was a very long incline followed by an equally long decline (in short, a hill). It got my heart rate going! The side of the mountain was pretty steep too. The hermit crabs kept rolling down into the path because they couldn't make it up (crabalanche...get it? Sorry I couldn't help it). After a while we got to a waterfall with petroglyphs carved into them from thousands of years ago. They were basically really old doodles. But still cool. Apparently the reflections of the carvings in the water was supposed to be a connection to the spirit world. Then we continued our hike and went into the ruins of an old sugar mill and then had lunch on a beach. The beach was basically made of dead coral and other sea inhabitants. It was cool getting to examine the coral up close and without masks and water interfering, even though it isn't the same as seeing the living organism. Fun fact: dry sea fans are much sturdier than you would think. Then we headed back, but some of us branched off to go up to an old house that overlooked the hills. However, nobody lives in it anymore but the bats. We finished the hike, which came out to 5.8 miles, with sore feet and legs. I was happy to sit on the beach for the rest of the afternoon.
